　久々に聴き、(7)「Leningrad」で "I was born in ‘49" と歌っているので、もうすぐ還暦を迎えるのか、と思ったビリー・ジョエル。１９８９年、彼が４０歳の時のアルバムで、発表から２０年も経つ時の流れの速さを感じます。


　当時高校生で、初めて聴いたビリーのアルバムがこれでした。きっかけはラジオで流れていた（２）「We didn`t start the fire」。友人に「あの曲、誰の？」と尋ねられ、分からず、一緒に調べ、遂に曲名を探し当て喜んでいた頃の思い出がよみがえります。


　４０歳になったビリー・ジョエルが、生まれたときから当時までを振り返り、各年代で話題になった出来事、人物の名をただ羅列しただけのユニークな歌詞となっています。アメリカの小学校では歴史の授業で子供に聴かせているところもあるとか。なるほど、これなら覚えやすいかも？

　他にも「ピアノ・マン」ビリーらしく、ピアノが素晴らしい(4)「I Go to Extreme」や(7)「Leningrad」、(8)「State of Grace」、(10)「And So It Goes」など、また中音域と高音域のヴォーカルを使い分け、やや重い曲調の(3)「The Downeaster ‘Alexa’」などが好きです。


　ただ、どうやらファンの間ではあまり好評ではない？ようです。
