They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America – they will be met. On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. 危機の克服は困難で、短期間では無理です。しかしアメリカよ、これは知っておいてください。危機は克服されます。我々がこの日この場所に集ったのは、我々が選んだからです。恐れではなく希望を。争議ではなく合議を。

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics. この日我々が集ったのは、あまりに長い間政治を停滞させてきた、口だけのお悔やみ、守られない約束、そしてもう役割を終えた教義に引導を渡すためなのです。

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted – for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things – some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom. 我が国の偉大さを再確認するにあたって、偉大さというのは与えられる者ではなく、勝ち取るものだということを理解しておく必要があります。我々の旅は、近道があるものでも楽が出来るものでもないのです。苦行より安楽をよしとし、富と名声のみを求める、心が弱い者には耐えられるほど。リスクを取り、行動し、何かを作る者たち、名声を得る者は一部で、仕事に隠れてしまって目立たない男女こそが、長く困難な道を乗り越え、繁栄と自由をもたらしてきたのです。

Our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions – that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America. 過去にしがみつき、狭い利益にこだわり、面倒な決定を後回しにしつづけられた時代は終わりました。今日から、我々は立ち上がり、かぶった埃を払い、アメリカを再創造する仕事に取りかからねばなりません。

They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint. 力はそれのみでは我々を守ってはくれません。力は慎重に用いてこそ大きくなります。目的の正しさこそ、安全の泉なのです。
