Darkest Labyrinth Vol.2

６月１３日、池袋 LIVE INN ROSAは、Darkest Labyrinthのイベントだったようです。そういうことは何も知らず、Rose Noireだけを目的に行きました。

この日はオムニバス参加アーティスト含め、１５アーティスト以上ものたくさんのユニットが出たのですが、体調が悪かったので途中で帰ってしまいました。ＣＤも気にはなっていたのですが買わずに。

そして数日後、またRose Noireのライヴがあったので、そこで入手したアルバムがこれ、という訳です。

最初は買うつもりはなかったんですが、１曲だけでもRose Noireの曲があれば聴いてみたいな、と思ってゲットしました。

そうしたら、他のアーティストの曲も良くて、手にして正解の当たりアルバム！　デジタルビートの効いたインダストリアルなサウンドが好きな人ならはまるかも？

(2)のSeileenや(3)のVanished Empireは実際観て良かったし、全収録曲の中でも特に好きです。他には、ライヴでは観ませんでしたが(7)のNoir du’Soleilが良いと思います。あと、(8)のBespa Kumameroと(9)のHimemaniKはライヴのステージが印象に残っています。HimemaniKは確か、今の２人で演奏するのはこの時が最後と言っていたと思います。

たたみかけるリズムが気持ち良いという点において、個人的にはDREAM THEATERの「Honor Thy Father」も仲間に入れたいアルバム、、、かな？と思います。ちょっと無理がありますけど(^_^;)

すべて未発表曲につき、これ↓は収録曲ではないのですが、、、

突然ですが、ワンポイントで、曲単位の感想です。

時間がないので、あまり考えなくても書ける内容を、

と逃げてみました（＾＾；

DREAM THEATER について思いつくままに。

DT のアルバムは、どれも好きですが、

最初、なかなか受け入れられなかったのが２枚だけありました。

『Falling into Infinity』と『Train of Thought』です。

今では、どちらも気に入っていますけど。

で、今回は『Train of Thought』に関して。

聴き方が変わったのは、『Live at Budokan』のＤＶＤを見てからでした。

映像、音響、照明なども素晴らしいですが、

演奏能力の説得力が圧倒的！！

ということで、以来、もしかしたら『I&W』や『MP2』よりよく聴いていると思います。

新譜は別として、最近のＤＴ再生アルバムはほとんどが『ToT』かも知れません。

しかし！

『Live at Budokan』では、「Honor Thy Father」は演奏していないんですよね。

ボーナス映像があるといっても画質悪いし。

この「Honor Thy Father」が好きなんですよ。

特に、ジョン・マイアングのベースが。

この曲に限らず、『ToT』は、アルバム全体を通してベースが好きです。

でも、なんかそれ以降のアルバムは、

ペトルーシ、マイキー、ジョーダンの影に隠れて、

マイアングが大人しくなっちゃったなぁ～、と感じますが、

それでも地味に超絶プレイしているし、それはそれで良いとして、

この曲の５分くらいから始まるインスト部分は悶絶ものです。

機械的な感じのするジョーダンのキーボードも良いですが、

その裏で、無機的というか、無表情に、しかも重く、

６→５→６→６のリズムをとるところのベースが大好きです。

しかも、そんな曲なのに、ラブリエの人間味あふれる声が、

違和感なく溶け合っているのもまた良いです。

１０分ぐらい仮眠したいな～、でも本格的に寝ちゃいそうだな～

と思うとき、この曲を大音量で聴いて気合を入れることが多いです。

ということで、この曲を是非とも生で体験してみたいのですが、

望みがかなう可能性はかなり低そうです。

それ以前に、来日してくれないことには（＞。＜）

どれも甲乙付け難いのですが、
DREAM THEATER の、
お気に入りの５曲を選んでみました！
まずは２ｎｄアルバム。
２ｎｄからは「Metropolis Pt. 1」も捨て難いですが、
１枚通しで聴き終えた時に長らく余韻が残るのが最後の「Learning to Live」です。
この曲は、「Wait for Sleep」とセットで１曲ですよね！
さらに言えば、
元々は、この後に「A Change of Seasons」へと続いて演奏される曲だったところ、
時間の都合でＣＤに収録できず、「A Change of Seasons」はミニアルバムへと。
だから、
「Wait for Sleep」～「Learning to Live」～「A Change of Seasons」
と続けて聴くと、味わい深く楽しめますね（＾ー＾）

１曲目の「Glass Prison」も DISC 2 も好きですが、それよりも好きなのがこれ。

The Great Debate

冒頭では、ベースとキーボードをバックに、
ブッシュ大統領の幹細胞研究に関する見解表明演説に対する議論がなされており、
ここも好きな場面です。
ＳＥを含めた歌詞は、以下の通り。

Who is going to scream the loudest? Will it be the right-to-lifers or will it be the scientists? And now what is going to happen is there will be a tremendous amount of lobbying in Washington, D.C.: scientists, entertainers, people who want to see this research – will be coming forth.
These developing human beings that you are talking about, these embryos, were produced in an artificial, scientific environment. In vitro fertilization is not God’s will.
We are on a road where we really don’t know where we are going as far as what’s next. We are talking about harvesting embryos. We are talking about this, we are talking about that, but what is the cost?
How could we possibly abandon the research?
That is right. That is the old question? If you think the research is good then you may not have a problem with it. It is only if you think the research is questionable that you get defensive about it. (You do have time to research these embryos later if we choose to do so. While people are suffering, we are not truly certain that this will provide a cure.)
And there was a great outrage in the conservative churches… You cannot use developing humans… At that point in time they turn into humans.
I feel that abandoning this research could be a mistake. Researching this may allow us to save other lives or at least to improve the quality of lives.
We do not have the answers, yet. We need to put the money where we will get those answers in the future. Listen, we are out of time.

The research is a scientific advancement. I know we are going down a road that we may not know where we end, but that is exactly what science is all about. I am very sorry, but I do feel sympathy for those whose spines have been severed… There is a possibility that we might cure them. I am concerned about a cure for juvenile diabetes and if these types of scientific advancement can cure these diseases, then quite candidly I think there ought to be at least what President Bush has proposed: some limited research.
I have a 28-year old son who is paraplegic. And if there is a small chance that my son can be able to have feeling and be able to walk then I am all for it.

のくだりが印象的です。
人の命を救うために命を奪う、という矛盾に対する問題提起です。
元々は「Conflict at Grind Zero」というタイトルでしたが Sep.11 以降にタイトルが変更となりました。
思わずループしたくなるほどこの曲は好きですねぇ（＾ー＾）
そして、

Honor Thy Father

『Train of Thought』アルバムは、最初は少し戸惑いましたが、
徐々に好きになり、一旦好きになったら抜け出せない魅力があります。
中でもこの「Honor Thy Father」は特にお気に入りです。
前半も好きですが、
圧巻はリズムチェンジ後、上の動画では 5’03 以降ですね。
マイアングのベース、ジョーダンのキーボードが近未来感を醸し出し、ＳＥも非常に良いです。
また、６→５→６→６というパターンの変拍子も緊張感を倍増させていますね。

Only a Matter of Time

これは、DREAM THEATER との出会いの曲です。
初めてラジオでこの曲を聴いたとき、
きらびやかなキーボードと、複雑なドラムに肝を抜かしました。
とてつもなく凄いことをやっているようで、聴きやすい。
それが第一印象でした。
ヴォーカルのチャーリー･ドミニシもこの難曲でかなり奮闘していますね。
「Majesty」という言葉から受ける印象そのものが、この曲からは感じられます。

Another Won

「MAJESTY」時代の曲。
原曲は、

に収録されていますが、２０年後のライヴ映像は何度観たか分かりません。
もう一度、ボーナストラックでよいので正規のスタジオアルバムに再録して欲しいです。
動画の最後の方のコメントで初めて知ったのですが、
マイキーのよくやるしぐさは、時計を見ていたんですね（笑）

かなりの再生回数になっているので、ご存知の方もきっと多いでしょう。
DREAM THEATER のインスト部分を編集したメドレー「Stream of Instrumentals」、
カナダの AykinSkywalker さんによる、９０分に及ぶ大作です。
聴けばお分かりの通り、最初と最後をつなげるところがニクイです。
ＤＴファンなら飽きないですね！

とあります。
そう、「DREAM THEATER / Live at Budokan」に貼りましたが、
「Instrumedley」を初めて聴いたときは驚きましたねえ！
さすがというか、やはりというか、
ライヴ・バンドとしての実力を見せつける演奏は、ただただ圧巻！
ＤＴ初の武道館ライヴは参戦できませんでしたが、ＤＶＤでもかなりの迫力です。
そして昨年の、２度目の武道館公演では、、、

の、各アルバムの最後を飾る曲をつなげた「Schmedley Wilcox」を披露してくれました。
つまり、
・Trial of Tears
・Finally Free
・Learning to Live
・In The Name Of God
・Octavarium
のメドレーです。
そのときの感想はこちら。
個人的に嬉しかったのは、ライヴ直前に書いた「"Learning to Live"が聴きたい」という願いがかなったことです。
事前に他国のセット・リストをチェックしておれば、ある程度予想できていたかもしれませんが、それではワクワク感が半減するので、敢えて何も調べずに行きました。その結果、驚きと喜びはひとしおでした！
その「Schmedley Wilcox」、『Chaos in Motion』の、[DVD Disc 1:Around The World In 180 Minutes] に収録されていますが、これ↓はポーランドでのライヴです。

Schmedley Wilcox って、どういう意味？
と思って調べてみたところ、DREAM THEATER FORUMS にその答えとも言えるスレッドがありました。以下、その一部。

面白がって、新しいメドレーを「Schmedley Wilcox」と呼ぶようになった、と。
「Wilcox」がどこから来たかは分かりませんが、とりあえず半分だけ答えました。

なるほど～ぉ。
で、「schmedley」って何だ？
と辞書を引いてみると、、、
schm-,shm-《口語体》重複語の第２要素の初頭の子音（群）と置換して、または母音の前に付けて「嫌悪」「軽蔑」「無関心」「それがどうした」などの含みをもつ語をつくる
とあります。
「へたれメドレー」とか「なんちゃってメドレー」
みたいなニュアンスでしょうか？
「Wilcox」については、ラッシュと関係あるかな～と思って、「rush, Wilcox」とググッてみたら、
Chris Wilcox という、アメリカのプロ・バスケットボールの選手が見つかりました。
マイキーはバスケが好きだからこの人のことでしょうか？たぶん違いますね（＾＾；
ご存知の方、情報募集中です（・ω・）ノ
ところで、先の DREAM THEATER のフォーラムには続きがあって、
元々は、このメドレーは「TOFLTNO」と言われていたそうです。

Yeah, it was some combination of all the songs in the medley. And yeah, a lot of live collectors used it.

Apparently so!

FYI, when I first started adding the setlists for the tour to the tourography, I asked MP what to call it and he said just to call it "Medley" and list the names, as Schmedley Wilcox was just something he came up with that had no real meaning. The impression he gave me was that it was never supposed to be the official name of the medley, but over time he must have changed his mind. Shortly after he told me just to list is as "Medley" I came up with ToFLtNO and mentioned it to MP, but he turned the idea down.

I still prefer ToFLtNO to Schmedley Wilcox as it's more clever and fitting (and I'm not the only one) but it's his decision. But that doesn't prevent some of us from still listing the medley as ToFLtNO on the bootlegs we release…

ちなみに、ツアー記録のセットリストに加えるとき、最初、マイクに何て呼べば良いか、聞きました。
そしたら「"メドレー"で良いよ」と言われました。
そのうち、彼が「Schmedley Wilcox」と思いついたんだけど、意味は無いんだよね。
メドレーに、正式な名前を付けるつもりは無かったみたいだけど、そのうち考えが変わったみたい。
「リストには"メドレー"としておいて」と言われたちょっと後、
「"ToFLtNO"と思いついたんだけど」とマイク・ポートノイに言ったら、却下されました。
「Schmedley Wilcox」より「ToFLtNO」の方が、それらしくて良いと思うんだけどなぁ（僕だけじゃないはず）、
でも、彼が決めたことだからね。
とはいえ、海賊盤にはまだ「ToFLtNO」と書いてリリースしているよ、、、

ということで、結論は、
Schmedley Wilcox とは、マイクがつけた意味の無いタイトル
ということになると思います。
英語の誤読があるかもしれませんので、「たぶん」と付け加えておきます。
